Earlier attitudes to the King, and indeed politics itself, began to rapidly change however in the 1790s, with fears about the rise of French principles spreading to Britain. The King himself now took a strongly conservative position, backing his minister Pitt in his repressive measures, leading to a new kind of Toryism
