Earthenware plate, c. 1775-80, mark WEDGWOOD impressed. THe figure of Aphrodite is based on the Meidias hydria in Hamilton's AEGR

These images are of the upper zone of the Meidias vase in the British Museum. The mythical event illustrated is the abduction of the daughters of Leukippos by Kastor and Polydeukes. Aphrodite is the central figure in the lower part of the scene. Wedgwood used her as the inspiration for some of his designs. For the myth of the abduction, see Kershaw, S., A Brief Guide to the Greek Myths, London: Robinson, 2007, pp. 235-6.
