19th- and 20th-Century Detective Fiction
Detective fiction is one of the most popular and enduring genres and characters like Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot have become household names. We will explore the origins and development of detective fiction and consider how crime writing exploits readers' fears and anxieties, and the sense of resolution and reassurance it can provide.
We will look at a variety of texts in their historical, social, and cultural contexts, as well as exploring critical responses to detective fiction across time. How can we explain the genre's continuing appeal?
