The Fall of Rome - part 2: AD 376-476

The ‘Decine and Fall’ (or 'transformation') of the Roman empire has long been a fascinating  and controversial topic which invites comparisons with the modern world. This course will examine the period from the East/West split in the Roman Empire to the deposition of Romulus Augustulus, the last western emperor, in 476. Touching on many engaging historical, social, artistic, political, and religious isues, and examining emperors, eunuchs, Christians and barbarians, this course will be illustrated with slides, video and handouts, and  aims to be an interesting, and perhaps surprising, look at one of world history's most important eras.
