Here is Love, Wide as the Ocean: The English Evangelical Tradition

Recently within Christianity we have seen ''evangelical' become a dirty word, associated with American fundamentalism and narrow-mindedness. This course examines the breadth of this historic theological tradition and the varying practices and beliefs within it.
The perception of much of the media is that 'evangelicals are a recent American import rather than a long-present part of the broader church catholic. We will focus mainly on the development of the beliefs and practices, from the Eighteenth century onwards of this broad theological tradition. Particular attention will be given to the role of Biblical interpretation, hymnody and ecclesiology in shaping those streams that make up the modern evangelical family.
We will also explore the relationship of evangelicalism to Pentecostalism and to the emerging church movement, represented in the UK by Fresh Expressions of Church and look at what the future might hold in the UK for this growing worldwide tradition.
