The Pianists' Workshop I
A practical class open to players of all levels. Piano technique, repertoire and interpretation will be explored in the context of workshops in which all students will have regular opportunities to play. Students may join this class in any term.
This practical class will cover a balanced mixture of finger technique, practice techniques and interpretation. In terms of technique we will work on developing the strength, agility and independence of the fingers through the use of exercises as well as the standard scales and arpeggios.
The practice techniques covered will include choosing repertoire; selecting and practising fingerings; identifying and resolving technical problems; interpretative issues; programme construction and the development of musical memory. The emphasis of this part of the course will be to give students the knowledge and experience to make best use of their practice time.
In addition there will be discussion of repertoire and some great composers for the piano will be profiled.
